Study music education at UNI – the state’s leader in teacher preparation
The School of Music is known as one of the finest music programs in the Midwest. Combined with UNI’s nationally renowned teacher preparation program, it’s no surprise that our music education program graduates more music teachers than any other institution in the state.
The Bachelor of Music in Music Education includes a choice of three specializations:
- K-12 Choral/General
- K-12 Instrumental/General

All of these emphasis areas include courses in applied music (private lessons), music theory, aural training, sight singing, music history, conducting, music ensembles, music education methods, pedagogy and professional education courses, making sure our students are prepared with the skills and experience needed to be leaders in their future classrooms.
UNI graduates are the largest single group of music educators in Iowa, forming a network of commitment to excellence and mutual support.
100% Placement Rate
The School of Music has celebrated a 100 percent job placement record for decades, for those who wish to teach.
The UNI School of Music awards $400,000 in scholarships to our students each year – helping our students pursue their degrees affordably.

Community Music School
Music is meant to be shared, and here at the UNI School of Music, it’s a key part of our mission to bring music to the community. Our students have the chance to get involved in different outreach projects, such as teaching music lessons at the UNI Community Music School, or organizing various summer camps for budding, young musicians.
