Graduate Music Student Responsibilities

It should be emphasized that each student has an obligation to become fully acquainted with all policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to graduate study, both with respect to statements that appear in the Graduate Handbook, as well as those in other university publications. It is also incumbent upon each student to maintain communication with the Graduate Coordinator as appropriate and to facilitate normal, regular progress toward completion of the degree or other appropriate objectives.

Graduate students in music degree programs are expected to maintain high standards of professional behavior. These expectations are the principles and standards governing how people behave in the professional music world. Frequent and/or serious violations of these standards may result in departmental probation or programmatic suspension as stipulated by the College of Graduate, Research and Online Education

  1. Reliability and Responsibility
    1. Attending all advising appointments with the graduate coordinator.
    2. Attending all required lessons, rehearsals, classes, performances, masterclasses,
      workshops, etc. Absences should be limited to those instances of serious illness, injury, or
      emergency, and should be reported immediately to the instructor, ensemble director or
      organizer.
    3. Arriving on time for lessons, rehearsals, classes, and performances.
    4. Being prepared musically and logistically for lessons, rehearsals, and performances
      (having scores, instruments, equipment, etc.).
    5. Meeting deadlines for assignments, jury materials, recital programs, scheduling of
      rehearsal and recital spaces, and (if applicable) reserving time with a collaborative
      pianist.
  2. Respect and Collegiality
    1. Treating faculty, staff, peers, and collaborators with courtesy and professionalism.
    2. Demonstrating constructive communication and problem-solving.
    3. Supporting peers’ performances and creative work by attending performances, providing
      constructive and supportive feedback if asked.
  3. Ethical Conduct
    1. Follow all university policies on academic integrity regarding plagiarism, citation of
      sources, unauthorized use of AI, etc.
    2. Respecting copyright and licensing in performances and research.
    3. Maintaining honesty in auditions, competitions, and job applications.
  4. Rehearsal and Performance Etiquette
    1. Being attentive and engaged in rehearsals (no phones, side conversations, or
      unprofessional distractions).
    2. Following conductor/director instructions respectfully.
    3. Exhibiting appropriate stage presence and professional attire.
  5. Teaching and Mentorship Conduct (if assigned assistantships)
    1. Showing respect for students in applied lessons or classes.
    2. Maintaining professional boundaries in student–teacher relationships.
    3. Providing constructive, supportive feedback.
  6. Commitment to Professional Growth
    1. Actively participating in masterclasses, workshops, and seminars.
    2. Networking and representing the School of Music positively in professional contexts.
    3. Demonstrating openness to feedback and self-improvement.
