Graduate Student Orientation
An orientation is held in the week prior to the fall semester for incoming graduate students. Diagnostic exams will be scheduled as part of this orientation.
ALL NEW STUDENTS MUST REGISTER FOR DIAGNOSTIC EXAMS:
Register for Diagnostic Exams
All exams and meetings will be held in Russell Hall #116 and #147 (computer lab). For more information, contact music@uni.edu. Please register EARLY (at least three weeks prior to exam date). Late registration will be granted only under extenuating circumstances, at the discretion of the the graduate exam committee and/or the graduate coordinator.

Schedule of Upcoming Exams:
All exams are held in RSL 116 and RSL Computer Lab (147).

Written General Comprehensive exams, based on the core classes, and Music Education Specialty exams should be completed four (4) weeks prior to the end of the semester in which the student wishes to graduate (with the exception of Online MME students taking comprehensive exams in August). Students on the MM Vocal or Instrumental Performance or Jazz Pedagogy degree programs should contact their committee chairperson for information concerning Specialty Area Comprehensive Exams. Specialty Exams must be completed one (1) week prior to the end of the semester the student wishes to graduate.
The exams during the fall and spring semesters generally follow this schedule:
- 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Foundations in Theory
- 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Topics in Theory
- 11:30 - 1:30 p.m. BREAK
- 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Music History
Please note that summer exams follow a different timetable; please see the graduate orientation schedule.
Music Theory and Music History comps are offered during the graduate diagnostic examination times for those subjects.
Students whose primary language is not English may have 30 minutes of extra time for each exam, but must request this time one week in advance. Students may bring a hardback or paperback dictionary. No electronic dictionaries or translation devices allowed.
PLEASE NOTE: You must register for the comprehensive exams in Music History and Music Theory (Analytical Techniques I and II) at least 3 weeks prior to the examination date. You must arrange your specialization area comprehensives directly with your graduate committee.
