UNI Opera and Musical Theatre has a rich history of performances with the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Recent productions include Susannah, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Serse, Suor Angelica, Dido and Aeneas, L’enfant et les sortilèges, Signor Deluso, Die Zauberflöte, Die Fledermaus, Prima Donna, and Riders to the Sea. And we even commissioned a new opera, The Beehive, which was specifically written for our own students!

Beyond enrolling in UNI Opera and Musical Theatre, graduate students in voice have the opportunity to enroll in courses specifically designed to improve their musical artistry and knowledge, and their skills in vocal performance. These include Opera Performance, Advanced Vocal Performance, Vocal Coaching, Opera History, Song Literature, and Diction courses.

Graduate students in the UNI Opera and Musical Theatre Ensemble have gone on to a myriad activities after completing their degrees, including performing on operatic and musical theatre stages, in professional choirs, flourishing in successful careers as music educators, and enriching their local communities as supporters of the arts. Our performing graduates have found themselves singing regionally and around the world, some at such notable venues as The Metropolitan Opera, the Opernhaus Zürich, the Glyndebourne Festival, Houston Grand Opera, San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Chicago Opera Theatre, Wolf Trap Opera, and many others. UNI’s close proximity to both the Des Moines Metro Opera and Cedar Rapids Opera means that professional opera is only a short distance away!
