Let your child know you understand and appreciated the effort that went into a project.   Be sincere and generous with your praise and be a specific as possible.
Positively Speaking

Sometimes it is frustrating to be a parent when you are so busy with so much to do and so little time to do it and that little person is not cooperating.

Your child is an important person and needs you to help her/him to learn and feel confident.  Sometimes it is hard to be a child when everything is geared for “big people” and he/she is just a “little person.”

Being a parent and being a child are both hard jobs.  There are ways that you can talk with your child, work with your child and help your child feel important and confident.  There are times when every parent must and should say no, but there are many times when you can say something in a positive way instead of a negative way.

If your child is playing with a dangerous stick, you want to remove the stick from the child and there are several ways to do this.  You can grab the stick and the child, not knowing why you ruined his/her fun, may get upset and cry.  Find a less dangerous but attractive object to attract the child’s attention and say “Look at THIS pretty toy” and then gently substitute the toy for the stick saying, “I’ll trade you this for that”. You can reach the same result both ways, but one way you have an upset child and the second way you have a happy child.

We hope these ideas will help you to do your job as a parent more effectively and pleasantly.

I’ll trade you this toy for that thing.

Stop grabbing!

It sure will help me out if you finish that job today.

Go finish that job!

Let’s see if we can figure out a better way to do that.

That’s not the way to do that!
