Johnny Hamil plays nationally and internationally in Mr. Marco’s V7, GAV7D, the Malachy Papers, Mikal Shapiro, rock bands ERIC, and Pamper the Madman. He has recorded many CDs with all of these groups and has many compositions/tunes on each record. The independent release of his album Sparkin Your Mama by Mr. Marco’s V7 was elected as “one of the best of 2011” by The Kansas City Star’s Timothy Finn. Some highlights have been performing at the Telluride Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz festival, Music Action Festival (Nancy, France), International Society of Bassists Conventions, Twin Cities Bass workshop, Austin Bass Workshop, Los Angeles Bass Workshop, Metro Bass Workshop, Oberlin Bass Workshop, and the George Vance Workshops. He also performs contemporary classical for the Kansas City based New Ear Ensemble. This is a small ensemble group in which he has performed such works by contemporary composer such as Xenakis, Kagel, Ligeti, and many more. He also plays the violone with the Baroque Orchestra of Kansas City. He also works as a freelance and studio musician in and around the Kansas City area in the rock, jazz, and classical genres. Finally, he composes and performs his own solo Double Bass pieces as well as standard repertoire solo pieces in recitals.

Dr. Alexander Pershounin
is the bass professor at UNI School of Music. He has performed extensively throughout Europe and United States in both classical and jazz settings and has been featured as a performer and composer on such internationally recognized music events as Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, Europe’s Jazz Contest in Belgium, and New Orleans Jazz Fest, among many others.
His performing credits include collaboration projects and appearances with world-class artists ranging from Bob Berg, Mulgrew Miller, Conrad Herwig, and Benny Golson to Itzhac Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, and Ray Charles, to name just a few. He also has recorded several commercially released compact disc albums and music to four full-length motion pictures.
He holds DMA and MFA degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and MFA and BM degrees from Russia’s most prestigious music institution: Gnessins' State Academy of Music in Moscow. Before arriving to UNI as a bass studio and liberal arts core instructor Dr. Pershounin had taught at Columbus State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Westfield State College, University of Southern Mississippi, and various music institutions in Russia.
