GUEST CLINICIAN

 Fumi Tomita

Bassist, composer, and educator Fumi Tomita was active in the New York jazz scene for over fifteen years.  His 2019 recording, The Elephant Vanishes: Jazz Interpretations of the Short Stories of Haruki Murakami”, was released to critical acclaim by Origin Arts records and was listed in the top ten records of 2019 by Jazziz.  He also appears as a member of HGTS on their debut release  And Then They Played… released in April 2020 by Summit Records.  Celebrating Bird: A Tribute to Charlie Parker, a collaboration with saxophonist David Detweiler, was released in September 2020 by Next Level Music.

 

He has presented his research at the International Society of Bassists Conference, Issues in Contemporary Jazz, Jazz Education Network, International Society for Improvised Music, BassEurope, Massachusetts Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education.  His article “As Long As There’s Music: Spirituality in Charlie Haden’s Performance and Solo on “Irene”” was published in Jazz Perspectives in the fall of 2019.  His book “The Jazz Rhythm Section” was published by Rowman & Littlefield in conjunction with NAfME in 2019.  Additionally, he has published articles in Bass worldJazz Perspectives, and the Massachusetts Music Educators’ Journal.  He is currently the Assistant Professor of Jazz at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Alexander Pershounin

Dr. Alexander Pershounin

 is the bass professor at UNI School of Music. He has performed extensively throughout Europe and United States in both classical and jazz settings and has been featured as a performer and composer on such internationally recognized music events as Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, Europe’s Jazz Contest in Belgium, and New Orleans Jazz Fest, among many others. 

His performing credits include collaboration projects and appearances with world-class artists ranging from Bob Berg, Mulgrew Miller, Conrad Herwig, and Benny Golson to Itzhac Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, and Ray Charles, to name just a few. He also has recorded several commercially released compact disc albums and music to four full-length motion pictures.

He holds DMA and MFA degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and MFA and BM degrees from Russia’s most prestigious music institution: Gnessins' State Academy of Music in Moscow. Before arriving to UNI as a bass studio and liberal arts core instructor Dr. Pershounin had taught at Columbus State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Westfield State College, University of Southern Mississippi, and various music institutions in Russia. His students won national and international competitions, were accepted in most prestigious music institutions, and successfully developed their own professional music careers. alexpershounin.com
