About the Program

The Grace in Being ~ Everybody deserves to be what they are meant to be. To be exactly how God made them. This music was composed for all those who struggle with the oppression of this world, a world that has yet to embrace the differences inherent in each of us. Race, religion, sexual orientation, these things and others should never be oppressed. It is sad to think that so many in this world live with this oppression. We should stop dreaming of the day when this oppression is lifted and instead work each day to make it so. We each deserve the Grace to Be.

Reverberations ~ This explosive short concert fanfare explores various sounds as they echo throughout the ensemble.  Based entirely on a two-note motif, the music makes use of minimalist techniques while adding fanfare themes and an extensive percussion backdrop. The end of the work reverses the direction of the motif as the woodwinds echo each other while the brass present the final powerful statements.

On a Hymnsong of Lowell Mason ~ In the early 19th century, the leading composer of hymn tunes was Lowell Mason (1792-1872), whose main activities centered in Boston and New York City. Mason is particularly renowned for having pioneered the introduction of music instruction on a regular basis into the Boston public schools in 1827. He composed or arranged some 1600 hymn tunes and compiled some eighty collections of music. Among the best known of his surviving are ANTIOCH (Joy to the World), AZMON (O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing), BETHANY (Nearer My God to Thee), HAMBURG (When I Survey the Wondrous Cross), and the tune on which this composition is based, the 1832 OLIVET (My Faith Looks Up To Thee).

Mambo Perro Loco ~ Crazy Dog Mambo is an original musical collage of Spanish dance forms including the Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, the Flaminco,  the Fandango and various classical and folk dance styles all set in ¾ time. Traditional percussion instrumentation including the Frog Rasp and optional accordion further enhance the works ethnic color and rhythmic drive. Only a crazy dog could dance to this and get away with it.
