Madelyn Potter remembers being so nervous for her first piano lesson. She was 10 years old, and decided to take lessons from a neighbor down the street. She bravely walked inside and sat down at the piano bench... and quickly fell in love with playing piano. She learned that being able to play music is like having a superpower! Using hands, lungs, and feet musicians are able to transform sound into something beautiful that everyone can enjoy. Who wouldn’t want to learn to do that?
Madelyn, originally from the beautiful countryside of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, grew up in an adventurous family of 8 kids. Her parents fostered in her a love for creativity and learning! She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, receiving degrees in both music and psychology before moving to Iowa and receiving a Masters in Piano Performance & Pedagogy at the University of Northern Iowa. Her goal in teaching the piano is to develop lifelong music-appreciation and music-making through the integration of healthy physical movement and intentional community collaboration. She has performed with the UWGB Chamber Strings, UWGB Jazz Ensemble, UWGB New Music Ensemble, UNI Wind Ensemble, UNI Chamber Music and Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra. She has participated in festivals and competitions including the Miroslav Pansky Memorial Concerto Competition, and the UNI Instrumental Concerto Competition. She is the president of the Northeast Iowa Music Teachers Association and has acted as a judge for local piano festivals and competitions.
