Originally from Carlisle, Iowa, Kate VanGorp is an undergraduate student majoring in Instrumental Music Education and Bassoon Performance at the University of Northern Iowa.
While at UNI, Kate has performed with the UNI Wind Ensemble, the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, and the Panther Marching Band. Kate currently serves as a drum major for the PMB. She has performed internationally in Scotland with the Wind Ensemble and in Italy with NISO. Kate has performed with various chamber music ensembles and hopes to pursue more of these opportunities in her professional career.
Outside of playing bassoon Kate is involved in the UNI School of Music in many ways. She is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Alpha Upsilon Chapter, a professional music fraternity. Kate serves as a Music Ambassador, the Music Education Chair for the SOM Advisory Board, and as a Music Director for the UNI Spectrum Project, a program that brings the arts to kids with disabilities. She is passionate about creating an accessible and adaptive learning environment for all students and believes that everyone should have access to the arts.
Kate currently studies bassoon with Dr. Matthew Ransom, the contrabassoonist for the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra and the principal bassoonist for Orchestra Iowa.
