Tom Barry supervises the audio recording and sound reinforcement for all recitals and concerts at the University of Northern Iowa School of Music. Before he retired from the full time faculty at UNI, he taught applied oboe and saxophone as well as classes in music technology and audio recording, guitar, and was the director of Jazz Band II at UNI from 1989 to 1991.
Mr. Barry has performed as oboe and saxophone soloist with bands and orchestras around Iowa. He recently retired from the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra after serving for 36 years as principal oboist. Currently Mr. Barry plays saxophone with a Cedar Falls based band, Checker and the Bluetones.
Although he is primarily a performer and teacher, Barry has engineered numerous CDs, tapes and records over the years for various university ensembles and faculty, as well as for other artists outside of the university setting in Iowa and surrounding states. In addition he is concert sound technician for the Salsa band, Orquesta Alto Maiz.
Tom Barry holds a Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He taught instrumental music in the Jefferson County public school system in Denver, Colorado before joining the music faculty at the University of Northern Iowa in 1973.
