John Hines

Professor of Voice

John Hines, bass, is a Professor of Voice at the University of Northern Iowa. A member of the UNI music faculty since 2006, his teaching responsibilities have included undergraduate and graduate-level courses in Applied Voice as well as Vocal Diction and Song Literature, with a specialty in Russian vocal repertoire and diction for singers.

Dr. Hines has maintained a local, national and international profile as a recitalist, master class clinician, and competition adjudicator. His performance repertoire comprises hundreds of art songs and over 75 symphonic, oratorio and operatic works ranging from J.S. Bach to Carlisle Floyd. Pinnacles of his singing career include a 2013 Carnegie Hall debut as the bass soloist in Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass, and 2009 recital debut performing Franz Schubert’s song-cycle Winterreise at the State Academic Capella in Saint Petersburg, Russia – the latter of which was a work not heard in this venue since the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, sixty years prior. Regarded as “The American Chaliapin” [Oreol-TV 4, Saint Petersburg, Russia] – performances which showcased his unique basso timbre and dramatic affinity for Russian music – Hines served as the American representative on an international panel of adjudicators for the Boris T. Shtokolov International Vocal Competition from 2008-2014. In addition to serving as an adjudicator, he presented master classes and was a featured performer in the competition opening gala concerts with artists from the Mariinsky, Bolshoi, Estonia National and Kiev Theaters. Many of his performances have been broadcast live over Russian Federal Television and Radio.

Prior to joining the UNI faculty, Hines has served on the music faculty at Cornerstone, Taylor, Indiana Wesleyan, Ball State and Pittsburg State Universities respectively. His students have gone on to succeed as primary and secondary vocal music educators, to pursue advanced degrees at prestigious university and conservatory graduate studies programs, participate in top young artist programs (e.g. Merola, Houston, Glimmerglass, Wolf Trap, Central City, Chautauqua, Des Moines Metro), or singing careers abroad.

Dr. Hines earned his degrees from Shenandoah University Conservatory of Music, Kent State University, and Heidelberg University. He also received advanced vocal and operatic studies from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and the American Institute of Music Studies in Graz, Austria.

Dr. Hines resides in Cedar Falls with his wife, two children, and dog “Buddy.”
